Non-Traditional Pharm. D. Program at the university of kansas

Didactic curriculum & suggested track

The curriculum below if for Baccalaureate pharmacists (B.S.P. from ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy) licensed to practice pharmacy in the United States, who wish to upgrade their degree to a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.). The program is offered through the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and the Edwards Campus in Overland Park KS. The eight 3-credit-hour didactic courses are taught using distance learning techniques (internet-based). There is a 3-year limit to complete didactic coursework. There is a 5-year total limit to complete the entire course. Successful completion of 3 hours of accredited Pharmacy School coursework from KU can be submitted to the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy to satisfy one year's continuing education requirement.

Experiential curriculum

The five 4-credit-hour experiential clerkships are very flexible. Clerkships are designed to provide opportunities to apply knowledge gained from the didactic courses and your prior experience in a clinical setting. This applied knowledge combined with prior clinical experience helps bring together the skills and experience necessary to manage difficult pharmacotherapy in the rapidly changing health care environment that exists today.

Progress in clerkships is measured by clinical outcomes documented by the development of specialized individualized clinical portfolios rather than the number of hours spent on a clerkship site. This provides more flexibility than traditional rotations. The experiential portion of the program is designed to provide the opportunity for completion of the required clinical work in the practicing pharmacist's home region. You don't have to relocate!

Written proposals for clerkship sites and on-site preceptors are first approved by the NTPD program. In this portion of the program, the focus is on students interacting with patients - proposed sites must provide access to patients. Students establish local clerkship sites and preceptors. University of Kansas provides a KU-based preceptor, with whom the student will communicate by email or fax, weekly during their clerkships.

Clerkships should be completed in a recommended time frame of 1 - 3 months (4 months maximum). One clerkship is a "linear care rotation" with an emphasis on clinical contact and monitoring. A portion of Experiential Rotation requirements may be waived with documentation of expertise in specific clinical (not administrative) areas.

The required clerkships are: PHPR 637 (Linear Care Rotation), PHPR 638 (Clerkship 2), PHPR 639 (Clerkship 3), PHPR 640 (Clerkship 4) and PHPR 641 (Clerkship 5).

Experiential Requirements
(must be completed before Clerkships begin)

1. Provide the Non-Traditional Pharm. D. office verification of current pharmacy license and maintain such license throughout the experiential portion of the program. If, during the program, license status changes, the student must notify the Director of the Non-Traditional Pharm. D. program. Failure to notify the Director may result in dismissal from the program.

2. Provide the Non-Traditional Pharm. D. office verification of current professional pharmacy insurance and maintain insurance throughout the experiential portion of the program. If, during the program, insurance status changes, the student must notify the Director of the Non-Traditional Pharm. D. program. Failure to notify the Director may result in dismissal from the program.

3. Provide documentation of a negative TB skin test in the past year. If you have had a positive TB skin test, you must have documentation of a negative chest x-ray within one year (completion of Isoniazid therapy is strongly recommended).
