Dr. Ronald E. Ragan, Director of the Non-Traditional Program
The Non-Traditional Pharm.D. program offered through the KU Edwards Campus, located in Overland Park, KS, is
designed to provide practicing pharmacists the opportunity to extend their education,
enhance their clinical skills, and complete Pharm.D. training while remaining in the work
force. This is an important advancement in the level of practice in the profession of
pharmacy. The Non-Traditional curriculum
promotes active learning, problem solving, critical thinking and is designed for the adult
learner.
The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy is dedicated to providing this
opportunity using distance learning techniques, primarily internet-based
education, to allow practitioners to finish the required course work while
continuing to provide pharmaceutical care in their communities. The experiential
portion of the program is likewise designed to provide the opportunity for
completion of the required clinical work in the practicing pharmacists home
region. Recognizing the needs of the adult learner, in most circumstances,
all course work can be completed with no travel to the university required.
The program allows for individualized assessment of
professional competencies to determine placement and allows academic credit for prior
learning as evaluated through the students preparation of a portfolio, challenge
examinations, or other methods of experiential assessment deemed appropriate by the
faculty. All applicants accepted into the
program need to be, or willing to become, proficient at using personal computers and must
have Internet access and an E-mail account. The didactic portion of the curriculum is
designed to be completed in two years with a 3 year maximum and the experiential portion
is designed to take 1.5 to 2 years with a total program limit of 5 years.
The Non-Traditional Pharm. D. pathway is part of the American
Council on Pharmaceutical Education accredited program in the KU School of
Pharmacy. Both our residential and the non-traditional pathway are designed to
provide the same educational outcome objectives. The non-traditional program is
affordable and provides one of the best educational values in the nation.
The NTPD program is no longer accepting new applications.
